Dirty boiler water

I have an WM-EG-series steam boiler in a one-pipe system. I'm preparing to repair/replace the boiler drain cock since it's dripping. Upon opening the cock, the water that came out was black. Is black water (after a Summer of no usage) indicative of a problem?
Also, I'm reluctant to replace the cock, for fear of damaging the boiler. I'd rather live with a small drip than damage the tapping into the boiler if for some reason I can't get the nipple loose. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Leak.
I would rather not live with the leak. There are always ways to fix a broken nipple. You may even be able to replace the internal parts/washer of the drain valve.0
