Oil burner adjustment - Carlin

have a Carlin (model 201 CRD) with an adjustable combustion head

it can change the firing rate from 2.5 gals to 5.5 gals per hr

is anyone familiar with adjusting the firing rate on these one stage burners - need to explore adjusting the burner due to short cycling (boiler is oversized)

also, since its oil, burner needs to be serviced and cleaned - dont think its been done for 5 yrs  (boiler cleaned but not burner)

    Carlin 201CRD

If the boiler was cleaned, I doubt seriously that the burner wasn't cleaned and adjusted too.

Down firing burners doesn't always give you the results you expect.

You need a set of head positioning bars if you change nozzle GPH size. The head positioning bar properly spaces the retention ring in the end cone for proper combustion. You really need a digital combustion analyzer and know what you are doing to change anything.

If you are not a professional, you need to call one. And hope you get a good one.

The 201 CRD may not use head positioning bars for adjustment but may have markings on the burner housing. You need the manual to know where to set it. If you get it wrong, it will run like crap.

    burner too large?

burner that was installed on this weil mclain boiler is a 301 CRD 3 1/2 air cone,

the boiler cycles on and off continuously at lower pressures (its a< 1 ounce system)

the 301 CRD burner specs are 4.0 - 7.0 gals per hr,  the boiler (series 80, model 681) is rated at 5.5 gals per hr

wouldnt the 201 CRD Carlin burner rated at 2.5 - 5.5 gals per hr be a better burner for this boiler.  the 301 offers no meaningful opportunity to adjust burner to a lower gph setting (assuming boiler will work adequately at a setting below 4.0 gpm).

    thanks
