is there any difference between a purge cycle for a steam boiler vs a hot water boiler?  seems that purge cycle may be longer for a steam boiler

its a process purges any linger NG fumes as a safety measure before firing up burner and at the same time release lots of steam pressure and heat from a boiler

maintaining longer burn cycles is good because it avoids excessive purging which is inefficient.

    Longer burn cycles

There are only a few things which will cut off a steam boiler from burning untill the steam has risen, and satisfied the controls/thermostat:

Unstable waterline causing the lwco to cutoff the burner.

Slow returns, high pressure blowing water into the returns.

Over-pressure causing the pressuretrol to cut off the burner.

Bad main venting or oversized boiler running wild.

A badly adjusted, or mis-chosen thermostat stopping the burner in anticipation of heat retained in the radiators.

Stopping the burner before it has done its job must be avoided for efficiency and comfort.

Get a better steam-certified thermostat or adjust the old one to run longer periods.--NBC
