Never seen this before

I was working in an old house getting ready to change the old boiler out with a mod con. I was tracing and marking the pipes so I could re-pipe them correctly. I notices one 3/4 in loop to baseboard left the boiler with Black pipe but returned with grey polybutylene pipe. Polybutylene???? I've never seen that on a hydronic system before. I doesnt have an oxygen barrier does it? I told the guys to take it out no matter what. Am I right in saying so?
