honeywell 24 volt relay buzzing..

I installed a new Honeywell R8222b 24 volt relay today and it buzzes when energized. It is mounted on sheet metal with foam tape behind it.  Will this go away in time or is it defective?  If I tap it a bit it goes away.

Thanks

Derek

    buzzing relay

Just wondering why you replaced the old one...Probably is bad out of stock however I have seen supply houses give non regulars a hard time returning electrical parts... Be prepared for the question  did you use a meter and what were your readings, and did you check the integrity of the wiring, Chattering relays usually means dirty or burnt contacts, but new ones should not be dirty, unless the one you got was once returned...A good digital volt ohm meter is well worth the price..Like Steam Head said it is most likely bad out of stock  ja

    Check

Check the voltage and make sure it's getting 24 volts.

    Relays don't always work right

I used to work on a radar power supply that had a 30A DPST relay in it for remote operation. One test the power supply had to pass was operating at 15% below normal 120/240v (the relay coil was 120v fed by a control transformer). I found about 10% of brand new Dayton relays would fail that test out of the box (buzzing and chattering), I used to have the purchasing agent buy extras so we wouldn't have to wait for replacements to ship equipment. Those supply's were selling for $21,500 back then so getting them out the door was important. The good thing is they never failed in the field unless they were dropped on the dock in Antwerp (oil filled and about 70# each).

In this case i knew the wiring was good and there were no drops in the line feeding the relay. Make sure you know what the voltage on that relay coil is. The fact is relays don't always work the way they should do to manufacturing tolerances.

    Agree... Replace the relay

They are cheap enough and things like lo voltage, dirt inside (yes even new relays) .  When the armature cannot either fully close w/o problems or is receiving lo vac, this can happen.  To satisfy your curiosity, remove it and plug into a separate 24 vac source.  If it buzzes it,s the internals....  It may have been made on a Monday or Friday at the factory, (OR) in China...  Just kidding......I think...lol
