heater banging help needed

in THE MAIN WALL
The system (what I know of it... dad designed, died 9 years ago):

2 oil fired boilers

baseboard heaters in 4 zones

about 17years old

have been having problem(s) off and on

with start up of boiler, lower floor rooms often experience loud banging (like sledge hammer on pipes/floor)  adjusting thermostat will often stop (or closing zone)

Upper zone (from time to time) experiences "gurgling" adjusting thermostat will stop

have bled, but will only last week or so, then start again, need to be bled

small (5gal?) expansion tank... could that be bad / too small?
