Header pitch

I am in the process of redoing my boiler header. This will be somewhat of a quine pig (if I get to it with enough extra time). Question #1. Is there such a thing as too much header pitch? I am thinking of putting the header at a 45 degree pitch to facilitate draining. Any pros or cons?

    that might make for

a strange piping takeoff configuration. Whats your plan for taking the takeoff off the header vertically? a wye fitting? I would stick with standard pitch on the header and install a large header. Fatter is better. Just my 2 cents.

    Header Pitch

Hi- You want to keep the pitch of the header to a minimum. The object of the header pipe is to separate water from the steam so that you have "Dry" steam in your system. To do this you would want the steam stream and the water stream in the header as smooth and calm as possible so that any water droplets in the steam will precipitate down to the bottom of the header and flow out through the equalizer pipe.

While a 45 degree pitch in the header would without a doubt definitely facilitate draining of the water, what you would be doing is creating a "waterfall" rather than a calm stream with the result being the turbulent mixing of the water and steam streams in the header and  producing the dreaded "Wet" steam

A 1 inch in 20 foot pitch would give you plenty of pitch to facilitate draining.

    You only need enough pitch

so the water can drain into the equalizer.

We also like to use a header one size larger than the minimum, to dry out the steam better. What model boiler do you have?

    header

Thanks for the replies. I do this for a living and am considered the steam expert in my region. I know that a 45 pitch is not needed and never have and probably never would do it that way for a customer. I was just curious what the results would be. I was thinking along the lines of Rod. The connections to the main risers would have to be 45's or Y's.It would defiantly look very weird. The boiler is peerless 63-03 with a 3" header. I try to use 3" headers as my go to size for headers.

    3" on that boiler

will definitely minimize the steam velocity.

We did a 63-03L last winter. The minimum riser and header size for this boiler is 2-inch, we went with 2-1/2":
