Fill pigtail with water

Recent post for low pressure gauge failure indicated possible cause to be failure to fill pigtail with water. Is this common practice?

    Yes.

    Some people count on condensation or splashing to fill the loop, but that's a bit risky.

    the water in the loop keeps the gauge from feeling the direct effect of the steam.
