Soft water for 1919 tube steamer make up?

Customer has a 1919 huge tube steamer. It's had a few tubes reolaced and the returns are rotted in a few places. One pipe.
They had another guy tell them a water softening system will make this thing last way longer and will remove deposits from the system.
Opinions from the pros??
Thanks, Tim

way longer
if this boiler is at the stage of tube replacement, then it is not a spring chicken, whose life-span will be increased by some magic chloride atoms from a softener.
better to reduce any abnormal need for makeup water instead of softening.--nbc0
