    CSD-1

There are requirements for additional safety devices for appliances above certain btu/hr ratings. 400,000 - 2 million btu/hr has a set of standards, 5 million - 12 million has another set of required safety devices, etc....etc...

Get a copy of CSD-1 and take a look. If your company is doing work on dual fuel burners, they should have a copy laying around.

    Large Commercial Gas fired boilers:

Go to the below site. It is the gas regs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It will be the same as the mentioned standards.

Go to section 9 and section 10. Section 10 gives you the requirements for redundant safety devices for large burners/boilers fired at over 400,000 BTU's to 1,000,000 BTU's. Then the next category, and up and up. The safeties are to prevent any large releases of energy being ignited when out of control.

I don't think that Massachusetts is much different from where you are. The whole large boiler code is there.
