Piping on one pipe boiler

We have a one pipe boiler system, a Parallel Flow/Up-Feed System and

have had problems getting water back to the boiler fast enough.  The

return water is piped back into the boiler at the same level as the

boiler return pipe comes out of the boiler without much of a hartford

loop only 2 inches that it comes back up to feed into the boiler.  For

the right hartford loop it should be looped and tie in two inches below

the water line as I have been reading.  Is the water line half way up

the sight glass or is it the point where the low water cuts off.  If it

is half way up the sight glass and two inches down if the boiler gets

close to low water cut off the incoming water from the hartford loop

where it ties into the header could be higher than the water level would

that matter.

    Piping

Hi-  The installation manual should give you a height of the waterline and the location of the Hartford loop connection. If you don't have the manual, give us the make and model number and we may be able to furnish you with the measurements.  A slow return of the condensate  may mean that the Wet Return piping is clogged up.

    Got you information

Thank you for your reply.  It is a Weil-McLain Boiler, Model # CGB-10, Series #2.  Hope this helps as we do not have the manual.  I will check the wet return lines when we have it all tore apart.
  • Are you sure it's CGB-10...

    and not LGB-10?

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    Water returns slowly

Either the condensate returns slowly, or

The pressure may be too high forcing water up into the returns during firing, or

The supply piping may be incorrect, flinging water up into the mains.

When it first fires, observe the waterline and see if it drops fairly quickly, as it steams, indicating a piping/pressure problem. For monitoring the pressure, do not rely on the mandatory 0-30 psi gauge, but instead install an additional 0-3 psi gauge, on the same pigtail as the pressuretrol. Some pictures of your piping posted here would be worth a thousand words --NBC

    LGB Manual

Hi- Attached is the manual for the Weil McLain LGB  series boiler. You'll find the info you wanted on Page 18 -  Fig 18 at the right side of the page. You might also want to check the manual to see if the proper size piping was used and if it is configured properly.
