New Smith Boiler to be installed

I am about to replace my 16 yr old V75 boiler with a Smith 8-3L (about 220 EDR load) with a power gas burner. The present boiler is much too large and the oil tank is 40+ years old, it works fine but could be more efficient. I figure the cost of a new tank will cover a new SS chimney liner and gas will probably be cheaper for quite a while into the future. If push came to shove I could go back to oil with the Smith.

I'll be looking to do this in early April. If anybody in the area just south of Boston is interested in doing the work let me know.

    You see a big difference

    Hi Bob,

I put in new Weil Mclean SGO4 404 edr last November. Riello makes a very nice gas burner for these wet based steamers. I am still making making adjustments to my system to get its steam output up. It is very quiet, has a pre purge mode at the beginning of each fire. Good luck with the install and enjoy the nice heat after.

    I agree

If I didn't have to replace the tank, I'd probably let the boiler run till it failed (techs claim it is in great shape) because the fuel savings alone don't warrant replacement. But with the tank on it's last legs and knowing the boiler header is about 16" too low, the time has come to let the moths out of my wallet.
