have Hot Water but no Steam!! 1 Boiler

Hi



I have an oil Boiler that provides both, steam and hot water, we had a problem... so i called a friend (who is a plumber) and he (temporarily) had a way to keep the hot water going but not have steam, all he did was went down to the basement (i'm not sure even if he turned of the boiler while he was working there) and was back up in about 2 minutes, he did this a few times recently (on and off), but now it was last left off, and i cannot get hold of him (i think he left town urgently) so i'm stuck without heat! help!



any idea what he did so that i can try to get my steam on again?

(just for info. its a one pipe steam system)

    (i would not be very excited though to pay for a service call)



    by the way not sure if i was clear,

    but what i meant was that the hot water is working just as before, which probably means that he some how just got the thermostat to be ineffective, perhaps disconnected?
