here is an online heat loss calc - seems good?

is this the same as heat load for purposes of sizing a boiler?

    HEAT LOSS

I presume you have a hot water system in which case you would do a heat loss calculation. If you have a steam system, you would have to total the EDR of all your radiators. Good Luck.

radiator sizing calc vs excess steam capacity

yes, did a calc and determined that the radiators in a large room (6000 sq ft) had a heat tranfer capacity of about 400,000 btu's (heat loss is calculated at about 300,000 at zero degrees)

the problem is that the steam boiler is rated at 3 million btu's

the space is heated a few times per week and steam boiler is off when not in use.

the excess capacity has been determined to result in heating costs to be about twice what they probably should be.

its a situation that may be costing about $500 more per month (at very cheap NG rates)

its cost prohibitive to replace boiler and shows how tragic it can be to install a grossly oversized boiler.

    Over sized boiler

Where are you located and what type of boiler do you have? Is it oil fired or NG?Many of those large boilers can  be down-fired or have  hi-lo-hi functionality. Post some more information on the boiler and you may get a reply from one of the pro's.  Good Luck!
