Tjurnland SS 2 Power Venter locking out

I inherited this customer. OIl fired boiler with tankless about 10 years old in newer home. Customer has issues with having to turn off and on again the stair switch then the power venter resets itself and she has heat and hot water again. This is a Peerless oil fired boiler with tankless coil. It does not happen every day but at least 4 times a week. It has been ongoing for about 8 months. She fired the oil company because they wanted to replace the whole unit after repeated trips. I changed the proving switch and it lasted 3 days before the problem happened again. She has never had to re-set the oil burner, just power down and power back up the unit from the stair switch. Any ideas? Tjurnland rep wants me to go back to job (1 hour away) and call him from there, but not sure I want to make the 2 hour trip if he will not be in the office or able to take my call right away, Any ideas out there? Many thanks. Mike

    Did you check

the little tube from the proving switch to see if it's clear?

Yes, I replaced the rubber tube when I replaced the switch. I did not check farther into the stainless steel nipple however.

    Did you

check the voltage, the amp draw, the relay that turns it on?

There is not a whole lot to these things.

    outlet from fan

often I find a little crud choking the nipple coming off the fan. Clear it by using a small drill bit. Also test the switch by sucking thru the hose ( cheap vacuum test)

    Board

80% of the time if it can be reset by the powering down and back on the motor relay is sticking bring a control board with you.

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    also check

what breech/over fire draft it is pulling. Usually the board will create a reset problem. Turning the switch off and on at first start up might be a possibility, but if it is wired right, it should lock the safety control on the burner out. The fan proven switch will make on negative pressure, and it should have a spillage switch on it too. This is thermal, and excessive temp should also break the circuit.  I like the SS-1 mucho better.

    The Tjernlund UC1 controller

'will retain and show the last fault cause. Check out their web site for details on the UC1. The whole guts of the SS2 will slide out the back of the unit.

    ditto SLO

I have removed some, and gone with the basic timer relay. The digital board has no value when it is cold outside and inside. Keep it simple and reliable

Many thanks to everyone on this thread. After 31 years in this business I never thought that I would ever again be servicing boilers, especially power vented ones, but circumstances change and I did it to help out a friend and now I own it. I will try all of your suggestions when I can gain access to the home again, probably this week. She is so used to turning the stair switch off and on that a few days will not ever matter. If I figured all my time, plus the 2 trips and my research, I could have had the local carpenter erect a pre fab chimney and I would be done with that issue. If the new board does not work and after I check out the wiring that is exactly what I intend to do. I will keep you all posted and many thanks from an old guy plumber, I appreciate it very much. Never had these problems with the 1725 RPM 2 gallon per hour 6 section monsters that vented into a center warm chimney!! Mike

    Tricky Dip Switch Settings

I called Tjernlund Tech Support one time for help with one that does what you describe. They had me set the dip switches differently, to prevent it from locking out. I can't remember now what the settings were. But you can call them from the jobsite and get good help. Sometimes the logic board tries to believe stuff that doesn't exist.
