The best one for oil-fired residential steam

is the Burnham MegaSteam. It's the most efficient, most durable, easiest to service and has the best warranty. Ask for it.

    Yes!

Megasteam is the best!  I am waiting for them to certify the thing with a gas burner.  I want to stage fire two of them!

    Come on, Burnham!

    Peerless

Hi- It's pretty hard to go wrong with any of the boilers made by the major manufacturers as long as the boiler is sized properly.  I have a Peerless ETC-04 and have been very happy with it though as others have mentioned, the Megasteam  is probably superior from a design point of view. I gather like me you don't have natural gas available?

If you are considering the Peerless, take a look at the Boiler Ratings in page 21 of the installation manual.  The ECT 04 can be setup for 471 to 650 sq.ft. of EDR with the corresponding fuel usage of 1.25 to 1.75 gallons per hour.  The ECT-3 can be setup for 283 to 426 sq,ft. of EDR with the corresponding  fuel usage of .75 to 1.20 gallons per hour.

If you are somewhere between the 426 and 471 EDRs you might want to consider the ETC-03 to save fuel.  Just a thought.

Peerless also uses push nipples between the boiler sections. I happen to like this over using just a gasket.

    The one installed right

the installer is more important then the manufacturer in this case.

    Indirect?

    Hey Steamhead,

Have you ever run an indirect DHW off one of these? I've got an MST513 in my basement, with a 53 gal superstor sitting next to it. The folks who did the install (about 4 years ago) initially used a 007 to feed it, but I've been going through them rather quickly (I think I'm on the fourth at this point).

I know that they didn't install the circ close to the floor initially, and when I asked them to do that they then wound up connecting things with the flow reversed: pulling from the bottom of the hartford loop and returning to the port that is labelled as the indirect feed.

I recently repiped it myself to flow in the right direction and to draw from the the upper port like the I&O manual shows, and so far things are holding together, but I thought I'd ask for input around here.

    Love the boiler, though...

    Thanks!

    The 007 is wrong

since the water in a steam boiler doesn't lubricate a wet-rotor circ well. Change to a bronze, 3-piece, oil-lubed circ such as a B&G 100AB and it will last much longer, as long as you oil it once a year. These things aren't cheap, but they're the right part for the job, and can be repaired if needed.

    Circ's

Yeah, I think I saw you mention the B&G and a Taco 110 on another thread somewhere.

How important is the bronze option (I know it like doubles the price)? What about electricity, do those "big" circs use a lot more than the 007, or are they pretty comparable?

    Thanks again!

    Circ

Beautiful job Steamhead. My next boiler will be an Mst. Wanted to get a larger WM 85 gallon indirect. Would the B and G 100 ab be a good match for that size indirect.

Also, I noticed the tappings on the MSt for the indirect are on the back of the boiler. would there be sufficient circulation through the boiler with the tappings on only one side. Everything I've read said the piping should be on different sides of the boiler to get maximum heat transfer for the indirect to work properly.

    much appreciated,
