I have a 368st oilfired steam boiler Weil McLain, for about a week it has been using water, and going off on Lwco. I shut the boiler off and let cool off, and filled it up. They let sit for 4 hours and nothing leaked out. I also checked the chimney with the boiler running and found nothing. The air vents seem to be ok they are gorton on the radiators and main any help would be helpful. Thanks Tom

    Leak?

Hi- Have you checked your Wet Return? Does any of the return piping go under ground?

When you say you filled the boiler up,  did you fill it completely to the top of the boiler or just to the operating waterline?

I filled the boiler to the very top. The returns are above ground.

water can be lost many ways

    Here are some of them:

Vents on mains or radiators not closing when steam reaches them.

    Radiator valves leaking from packing.

    Returns (especially underground) leaking un-detected.

Leak in boiler sending steam up chimney

Do you have king valve(s) on the steam supply from the boiler?

Are there check valves on your returns.

Filling the boiler is not always the best indicator. If you have check valves on the returns then a leak in an underground return will not show from this test.

Vents that are not closing can usually(not always) be heard venting the mains or rads even after hot.

Give us more info and maybe some pics of the boiler and surrounding piping and we will try to help more.

What is the pressure set at ?

And do you have a working pressure gauge ? you could try shutting off all the rads and run the boiler  let it build pressure and watch how quickly it drops. Feel along the piping and see if the steam is going somewhere?  if it drops quickly and the piping is not getting hot it is probably a leaking boiler. If it does not drop , open the rad valves one at a time and listen to the vent. you should hear some air leaving the vent, keep listening, when the rad gets hot, does the vent close?
