have customer converting from oil to gas has one pipe steam system.looking to give him an effiecent gas boiler most i can find 82,83%.Is there not to many choices for gas steam boilers.

Wet Based Boiler with Gas Power Burner

If you want maximum efficiency in a gas steam boiler, the consensus is to use either the Smith G-8 or the Slantfin Intrepid with a gas power burner. Both boilers are wet based oil boilers but are also factory approved using  the Carlin EZ-Gas power burner.. While it hasn’t been “officially” measured, it is thought that the efficiency is in the mid to high 80s.

Look at the thermal efficiency

not just AFUE. On a wet-base/power burner unit this is around 86%. The usual atmospheric gas steamer can only manage 80-81.5% or so.



The difference is due to the following:



1. The wet-base unit almost completely surrounds the flame with water-backed cast-iron, and



2. The power burner needs less excess air for clean combustion.



Thermal efficiency is figured by calculating what percentage a boiler's DOE Output is of its Input rating.

the real efficiency in a steam boiler comes from a perfect installation, following the mfg's piping diagram at a minimum.

make sure the main venting is more than adequate, so the gas company is not being paid to squeeeeeeeeeeze the air out of constipated little openings.

additional efficiency comes from the installation of a low pressure vaporstat and low pressure gauge, so you are not paying extra for extra pressure above 4 ounces.

if you can arrange it, make sure the return is gravity, and the feed is manual.--nbc
