need help skimming

I notice that the water cascades over into the sight glass when the boilers running which suggests I need to skim. The problem is the boiler is almost 10 years old and I`m afraid of cracking a section when I try to take the nipple out, it`s in there pretty tight. Would it help if I sprayed it with a penetrating lubricant or Is there another fitting I can skim from? The unit is a burnham V84.

Penetrating oil won't help
Steam fittings are assembled with pipe joint compound, which prevents penetrating oil from getting into the threads. It also hardens over time which makes things very hard to take apart.
I'm a little confused about why you need to remove a nipple from the skim port. If someone already installed a nipple, why can't you use it? Is it capped, or is there a valve on it?Just another DIYer | King of Prussia, PA
