burners shut off during heat cycle

I have a 25 year old gas fired boiler w/electronic ignition. When the thermostat calls for heat the boiler fires and the circ. pump starts. During the heating process the burners will stop burning(no gas), the pump keeps circulating and a second or two after the burners went out they come back on. Any ideas?

First thing to check
When the burner shut off, what was the water temperature? It could be a control issue. The burner couldve shut off on high limit, the circ would still pump until the temperature dropped about 10 degrees below the setting, and let the burner fire again. But that should take longer then a sec or two. Are you using this for domestic hot water too? What kind of aquastat is on your boiler, and what are the high, low, and differential settings.
The second option, and the first place to have a pro look, would be at the gas valve & thermocouple. Might not be sensing flame, something could be loose, etc.
Best to bring in a pro...There was an error rendering this rich post.
