Steam Power!

This is way off topic, but I thought that many people on this site would enjoy watching.

It is relevant when one considers that the waste steam from many old engines was used to heat buildings.

Growing up in Mt. Pleasant, IA, I used to ride my bike out to the Thresher's grounds and stand and watch this old machine run.... and get in trouble for being late coming home because I had stood motionless for over an hour and watched this old baby slowly turn.

There is a similar Corliss engine

at the Rough & Tumble Engineering Association at Kinzers, PA which is just east of Lancaster. That one ran an ammonia refrigeration compressor at the Kunzler meat packing plant, which is located somewhere in that area and is still in business today.

Watching one of these things run makes you appreciate the Dead Men who designed, installed and operated them. You don't find that level of craftsmanship today, people just say "oh, there's an app for that".
