Heat Loss Calculations (Hot water rads)

Hi there,

Does anyone know a company that I can send my floor plans to, to have heat loss calculations done by room?

We're renovating a 7-unit apartment building built in 1880. We've changed the floor plans, insulated the walls, but we're putting back in the old cast iron how water rads. The rads won't be put back in the same place, or be necessarily the same size.

I need the heat loss calcs done so I know what size rad(s) to use in each room and where to put it.

I've found calculators on the internet (like this one: http://www.theradiatorcompany.co.uk/heatoutput/) that calculate the heat output by room, but i'm not sure if i can trust the calculations.

I'm in Ontario, Canada and a lot of these companies that have calculators are in the UK where climate is different.

Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Juliana

I had mine done at Wolseley Mechanical and we are in Ontario - http://www.wolseleyinc.ca/. They did a thorough job.

    Tell me more

    Hi there,

Thanks for the referral. I will call them tomorrow. Can you tell me more about what they did for you? I've had a terrible time here in London... getting quotes for this type of work was near impossible! NO ONE wants to deal with the old cast iron rads... One company quoted us, and things started off well, but now I"m beginning to wonder if they know what they're doing.

    Thanks again,

    Juliana

    Sure,

I sent them an AutoCad drawing of the house. We made some assumptions about the insulations levels (the house is quite old and is stone, basically there was nothing other than the stone...) and from that they calculated a room by room heat loss.

Once we had that, I sized and placed reused cast iron rads (ironworksradiators.ca - great place for reasonably priced rads) in the rooms. I actually found that process quite enjoyable.

If anything I would estimate that the heat loss was a bit generous but as I said we had to make a lot of assumptions about the building. The boiler is a mod/con and I don't think I've seen it running at more than 50% modulation. I also sized the rads to be about 25% larger than needed which meant I could lower the water temperature. My ODR is maxed at 135 which keeps the boiler condensing.

Send me a pm if you would like to see the details from the heat loss.
