How is this done? Would like to close off some rooms in the house but don't know how. I don't believe there are any keys - the house is 101 years old.

Valves
If the original valves on the radiators are not working, replace them with thermostatic radiator valves (TRV's) for precise temperature control of each radiator. Standard radiator valves can also be used simply to turn the radiator off; they cannot be used to control (or throttle) the temperature. Valves on a 100 year old system often leak and become jammed with sediment. TRV's can be obtained from 1/2"- 11/4". Regular radiator angle valves are available from 1/2" through 2"0
