vacuum steam

just replaced a steam boiler on a vacuum system. The boiler had a tee just above the water line, on the column with a trap piped to the vacuum return. What is that and whats its purpose?

Looks like an open swing check. But for what? Did this used to have a return going to it? Maybe someone thought this would act as a vacuum breaker?

    ?

Doesn't look like it had anything connected to that check valve, and being that its after the trap it couldn't be a vacuum breaker for the boiler, only for the return line coming out of the steam trap.(I think). My question is what was the steam trap and return line doing there to begin with?
