Hydrotherm VOA-120 Boiler Problems

Options
I have a Hydrotherm boiler that is over 25 years old and I recently went on vacation for 6 days and shut the boiler completely off since I have a tankless water heater and since it is still summer I decided to leave off so boiler would not cycle for no reason since no one was going to be home. When I arrived home I decided since it was still off to flush the system prior to restarting boiler. I emptied the water out of boiler to remove black water and refilled it to water line on sight glass. When I fired up boiler it started to smoke a little inside the basement. I had this happen to me once before and at the time I had a service plan for boiler and they came in and cleaned it out. What I remember is that the tech told me it had to do with the burner not firing properly and had soot. (I could be wrong). My question is, Is there a way for me to perform a tuneup myself to try and correct issue. I am mechanically inclines somewhat and could perform maintenance if needed. Can someone guide me in right direction. I really appreciate it.

    let me

    as much as you may be capable you do not have the tools, experience and training needed in order to properly service this unit. Do yourself and your family a favor and hire a pro to come in and properly tune the unit. It will pay for itself...
