convert to gas now, or wait until I learn more about steam?

Thanks, JohnNY!
My inclination is to replace the boiler, because I can tell that the house in general has not been well cared for in recent years and so I assume the boiler was not well cared for as well. The service label on the boiler is hard to read, but I think the last service was in 2003. If it had been better maintained, I might think more seriously about trying to keep it going.
Thanks for posting the pix!0 -
One contractor I spoke to...
said that an EZ burner would not be appropriate for my old Weil McLain. Maybe he was just trying to sell me a boiler, but in general I felt that he was not giving me a hard sell, so I'm inclined to believe him.0 -
Good luck, Hoog23!
I hope your system runs beautifully. Do post pictures.0 -
That's a 68-series W-M, right?
at least one other Wall user put an EZ-Gas in a 68, and it set up nicely.
And, if you replace the boiler, you can use one of the ones I mentioned and put your EZ-Gas into it. Might have to change the air tube, but the same burner chassis will carry over. All Steamed Up, Inc.

Carlin EZ-gas
I just replaced my beckett head with a carlin ez-gas head, I had gas in the house and the oil tank was very old that i never replaced when i installed the slant fin liberty 2 i bought from home cheapo that was miss priced at 500.00 hundred dollars about 6-7 years ago, Just waiting for my combustion analyzer i ordered to arrive so i can put the final tune to it, had an old wet kit that leaks. Unit is very easy to install and seams to work as advertized, Had to remove old damper and install spill switches and install chimney liner, The cost was 1k for parts, pipe, gas head, chimney liner ect ect.0 -
hmmmmm
From who? NSTARs price last winter was $0.83 per them for gas + fees which came out to $1.23 all up. Thats $1.69 oil equivalent.
At that rate a typical home is saving hundreds... if not thousands per season vs. oil at $3.50
If you figure the total cost of natural
gas (fuel, delivery, and fees you will see that amounted to $1.93 per
therm (100,000 BTU's) in February of this last winter. Now since a
gallon of oil contains 138,000 BTU's we can extrapolate the cost of
natural gas to be $2.66 for an equivalent amount of oil0
