Pick up

I am sizing a replacement steam boiler for an old mansion here in Spring Hill Tn. After performing a survey of the existing rads and determining the EDR, I have a question on what pick up number to use. The building is 2 stories with an attic (high ceilings throughout), and boiler is in the basement. Only the piping in the immediate area of the boiler is insulated. The rest of this two pipe system is bare. All of the rads are recessed or semirecessed units. I am thinking of using a 1.5 pick up but would like some advice. A picture of the building can be seen at the following web site, it is Haynes Haven http://historicmaury.org/index_files/historichomes.html#hayneshaven

Thanks

    on the surface just looking

at it without any info, i never really add extra pickup...but..i do add extra water from time to time with a reservior tank if the place is huge and the system is predominatly overhead returns...you don't say if its one pipe or two pipe..i round down for two pipe, and round up for one pipe on my boiler sizing..not sure if any of that helps you out...but i work in a lot of mansions and have yet to add extra for piping.

    Insulation

I never add pick up factors either. the manufacturer add 33% already. i would insulate the pipes that are not insulated as that will take more water out of the boiler, and longer to heat due to giving up latent heat.
