We knew it was a matter of time that the US would follow Canada's lead on the demise of the 80% efficiency furnace for only +90 % efficiencies.

The good news is that the new standards will be regional.

Implementation dates May 1, 2013, for non-weatherized gas and oil-fired furnaces and mobile home gas furnaces, and on or after January 1, 2015, for weatherized furnaces and central air conditioners and heat pumps.

The Northern region for furnaces contains the following States: Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine,

Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon,

Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

These states will require 90% only efficiency for gas furnaces

It looks like Southern region will able to still install 80% gas furnaces. Now split system airconditioner SEER for the south will be boosted to 14SEER. Split system heat pump 14 SEER National Standard.

Still sifting through this 141 page document.
