Bell reducer in a main

I am assembling the forward main for my one-pipe steam system.  It is a parallel-flow main and begins life as 2" black pipe but needs to be reduced to 1 1/2" black.  I have more 2" pipe then 1 1/2" pipe and would therefore like to plumb it from the header with a 2" riser, 2" ell, 2" x 24" nipple and then use a bell reducer to bring it down to 1 1/2" in the horizontal, parallel-flow main.

Will using the reducer in this location cause water hammer or any other problems?  Does anyone know if I can purchase an eccentric bell reducer, threaded, 2" x 1 1/2"??

Thanks,

Mike

That bell reducer WILL cause banging

and you should be able to find an eccentric reducer if you look hard enough.

    Eccentric reducer

Will the eccentric cause any issues or will it be fine, assuming it is installed in the correct position?

Also, in searching through other threads, I found an Anvil catalogue but not a place to purchase Anvil fittings (and I do not care if I purchase it from Anvil or not, so long as I get what is correct).   Any supply house online that will sell me a single fitting or does anyone know of a place between Philadelphia and Reading, PA?

    Thank you, Steamhead.

The eccentric is the right part

and there should be someone in Philly who carries them.

    Try Anvil

     Hi Mike-

It will probably be a special order item as they probably don't usually stock eccentric reducers in the size you want. You might also contact a local fire sprinkler contractor and ask them where they get concentric reducer fittings as they quite often use them in building sprinkler installations.

Anvil Pipe makes a eccentric reducer in the size you want. I've attached the catalog page.  Fig.368 Eccentric Reducer 2 x 1½   Page 49

I got mine through F.W. Webb. Webb have outlets all over New England and New York though I’m not sure if they are as far south as Pennsylvania.  Call around to your big local suppliers and see if they carry Anvil.

Anvil's headquarters is in New Hampshire and one of their plants is in Columbia, PA so if you get stuck, trying calling their PA plant and maybe they can give you a lead one of their supplier outlets.

    Location of bell reducer

Riser height is an issue.  I do not have an eccentric or a bell reducer at the moment and I need more fittings and custom length nipples to boot.  That said, I will be making a trip to my favorite salvage yard to buy new fittings by their weight.  I will be looking for a reducer for this main, as well as, a take-off for a radiator and if I find a reducing ell of the correct dimensions, I may use that instead.  Thanks for the suggestion.  Tough to think about creating heat when its so dog-gone hot outside (was 113 on my trucks rear-view mirror readout when I got into it this afternoon).  Blah.

    Thank you,

    Mike

    Maddog,

Are you bragging or complaining?  : )

Do you have any 2" x 1 1/2"?  Do you have one 1 1/2" x 1 1/4"?  If so, I would be happy to relieve you of them/it for a reasonable price.  Let me know, please.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Rod and Al,

Thanks for the info.  I will follow up with Anvil if I am unsuccessful with my "by the pound fitting/salvage dealer" in PA.  Thank you to both of you!!!!!
