ITT radiator steam traps

Options
I'm going to put Tunstall capsules in all of my home's radiator steam traps this Fall before the heating season starts. This includes four ITT 17C's and one ITT 8C. Are any special tools required to remove what's inside the trap once I get the cap off?

    Depends

    on which version you have.

If you have the Dura-Stat version, I think all you need is a socket wrench to remove it from the trap body.

If you have the original version, and you're using a replacement that requires removing the original seat, you need a socket wrench to get it out of the body. You'll also need to unscrew the bellows from the cap.

removing the insides is the easy part.

The lids of ITT traps...well thats another matter..we use an impact wrench.

    Removing Trap Lids

I first started out with a socket and a breaker bar and soon saw that there was a high likelihood that I was going to twist something off which was not necessarily the lid of the trap. This is especially so where space is tight and you can't get a wrench in to properly hold the trap body. I followed Gerry's suggestion of using an impact wrench and it is definitely the way to go,  It made a nasty job easy. I used a pneumatic wrench but you can get an electric one either by renting or buying. Home Depot has them in several different grades/prices. An impact wrench and an IR thermometer are a must when working on traps.
