Remnantts of an old boiler

My wife and I just completed a vacation in Ireland and England. While In Ireland we visited Kilkenny Castle. The taking of pictures was expressly prohibited, but while looking for the public restrooms I came across this just off a walkway from one of the stairwells. It was partially exposed above the floor of the walkway.
I snapped a quick pic before anyone wandered by. I wish I could have taken a couple more pics. There was a plaque on the wall that read "Part of the original heating system". I'm assuming they mean original as of the late 1800's, which was the time of the last renovation before the current restoration projects.

-Sorry for the title goof up. I fat fingered it and cannot see a way to correct it.
