zoning steam heat

I was wondering whether it's possible to zone steam heat without using hot water. I haven't read in any of the books I've looked at about this being done.

    if you can

somehow modulate the boiler it is possible..once a zone closes the boiler will probably just go off on pressure if it can't modulate..BoilerPro in Chicago uses full modulating burners i believe.

Depending on how you do it, zoning can be very easy.  The easiest way is to install thermostatic radiator valves on each radiator and then a central heating plant controller.  As Gerry said, using a modulating burner will make the system work very smootly and efficiently.  This gives you radiator by radiator control, so it tends to produce energy savings and unmatchable comfort.  I understand that this is how most of the world zones thier heating systems, they use TRV's.  We're a little behind in this country when it comes to efficiency and control of our heating systems, so keep up your search for better solutions than typically presented.  If you're in my area, give me a call.

    a central heating plant controller

What is a central heating plant controller? Can you post an image or URL where I can see one, read about and understand it?

    heating controller

i think what is referred to here is the tekmar 269/279 [with outside temperature sensor] with the inside sensor disabled or installed in a non-trv radiator room.--nbc
