stainless steel liner

my father in law's chimney collapsed. he already had a stainless steel liner in it. the only thing going in to the chimney is a LP fire place. would it be ok to build a chase out of wood around the liner, if so what is the clearance, or should i just run b-vent with a chase.

    liner

Stainless steel chimney liners are just that...chimney liner. DO NOT enclose it in wood. B vent can be enclosed with clearance requirements. Check manufacturer's instructions and your local codes before proceeding. If I were to enclose any metal chimney material, it would be 2100 degree all fuel insulated stainless steel pipe, like Metalbestos or a like brand. Can't be too safe when it comes to exhausting combustion fumes.

    cost

For the cost of it, you may wish to look at getting a direct vent gas log and doing away with the chimney altogether. If this is a free standing unit, they do make insert's that would fit in it's place and vent directly out the back. Just a thought....
