I have a 960 square foot cabin with a 2 ton coil installed in propane goodman furnace. Can buy a two year old 1 1/2 ton goodman condenser very cheap, but would it work?

SURE ,IT WILL!
But,properly ,is a different story. What is the BTU load calc? What is the SHR?[ eh,Brad !]0 -
Sure
Some brands don't even have an odd ton coil, they use the next bigger (or even smaller). Just need to do what the manufacturer approves of and use proper sized metering device. Usually not an issue with TXV but with piston.0 -
I would be prepared
to adjust the airflow downward if humidity removal is key to your success. Running 800 cfm over a 2-ton coil with 1.5 tons refrigeration might not drop your air below the dew-point on some days. Depending on your inlet conditions, you may wind up running 500-600 cfm across the evaporator.
Naturally, do not drop your air below the coil frost point but you knew that."If you do not know the answer, say, "I do not know the answer", and you will be correct!"
