Guess the Weight

I'm having a small contest.

One entry per person.

Guess the weight of this boiler.

To celebrate my pending return to full employment, I will donate $50 to

the charity of your choice if your guess is the closest to the actual

weight of my old boiler.

I'm disassembling it so I can leave it in sections for the metal scavengers.

Good Luck,

Eric Peterson

    weight before or after?

this could be a trick question, so I'd also say 160 lbs per section

    Halfway done

    I've removed half the sections.

The two end pieces are the same, as as the five middle ones.

So I now know the weight.

Some of the guesses are pretty close.

Winner will be announced at 8PM CDT.

    And the winner is....

    lchmb @ 775 lbs.

    End panels: 2 x 134 = 268

    Inside panels: 5 x 104.5 = 522.5

    Total =  790.5 lbs.

I wonder how they got it down the stairs back in 1955, it's almost twice the weight of its replacement.

Ron Jr. would have won with his mention of 800 lbs, but he went higher to avoid camping on lchmb's guess.

    Thanks everybody,

    Eric

Another Ode to the Dead Dudes.

My grandfather and father (Dad is still alive but retired) were among them.  Tree stump of men.  I am in awe of the work of their era almost weekly.

    Thanks Eric.

    In conclusion

Tools used for the disassembly: safety glasses, steel-toed boots, 5# sledge, 1-1/4" length of pipe.

All that left is a pile of rust and metal scraps. That thing was made to last!

I made a donation of $50 to the local (Wheaton, IL) Habitat for Humanity last night.

    You got it Charlie

They always seem heavier than they are, and more the so as we get older. Closer guess would have been achieved by knowing what boiler it was, I think.

How did you weigh it ?

Did you use a scale or weigh them individually at the scrap yard ?

Used to watch Price is Right when I was a kid and hated when someone would bid one buck higher than another  :)

Good luck with the project Eric . Share some progress pics as it comes along .
