zone valve and boilermate

My electrician has retired. I'm trying to put in a used boilermate thats kicking around the shop probono. Is not there a way to have the boilermate thermostat speak directly to the zone valve?

    Many a system was wired to directly operate a zone valve through a thermostat.  The thermostat is wired in series with the zone valve so when the thermostat calls for heat, it will complete the circuit of 24 volts to the zone valve.  The zone valve opens and the zone valve end switch closes, turning on the boiler and pump.  No?
