Re-hanging a ceiling radiator

Anyone ever play with Lincoln Logs as a kid? This is the grown-up version.



This rad was held up by four lag bolts. Two of them had pulled out, since they didn't penetrate the joist above, and this caused a dip in the steam main which collected water. Gordon built a platform of 4x4s to jack it up. A pair of 3/4x36" precut nipples, four clevis hangers, some all-thread and hanger bolts and nuts completed the job.



With the dip gone and a Gorton #2 at the end of the main, the system heats evenly and doesn't bang.

    Radiation or convection?

    How does the radiator heat the space?  Is there an opening above the radiator to allow air flow?

    It radiates downward

    not the greatest way, but in a basement you don't really need that much heat.
