Basement Heating?

Hi This is my first winter in a newly purchased home with a one pipe steam system circa 1950. I found tons of great pointers here and a big thank you to all...Now on to my question(s) - I refinished my basement and am looking for proper ways to heat it. I have foolishly had my plumber hide the return behind the studs/drywall which I now realize could have been outside w/ radiators covering to provide some heat. Another issue is that there are NO vents on the main and I know I need to tackle that along with re insulating it due to removal of old asbestos covering. The main has been enclosed in a soffit running along the main beam of the house. Would it be crazy to cut out vents in the drywall to let some heat from the uninsulated main escape into the basement? I know it'll cost more in fuel, but would that harm the system? Thanks.
