    What did he do?

Did the tech clean the boiler? Change the nozzle? If the boiler was sooted up, it might not have been operating as efficiently as it is now after cleaning. So now it is generating more steam and behaving as if it was firing at a higher rate.

Did he make any changes to the burner which might have increased the firing rate? Any changes to the steam side of the system?

    mystery

The boiler was cleaned and replaced with a 1.25 nozzle which is what has been used in the past. I'm wondering that if in fact the boiler is firing at a higher rate if the size of the nozzle could be reduced. Or, maybe the tech without realizing it, put in the wrong size nozzle? Nothing was done to the steam side, I did however recently clean out the pigtail which was a little restricted.

    Oil for your boiler

with that nozzle is to be 140 psi. he may have set it higher or the boiler was just that dirty before. What is the pressuretrol set at? Did it get moved?

    The pressuretrol

is set a .5/ with the inside wheel at 1

The pressuretrol did not get moved.

What would happen if I reduced the nozzle size?

    Mystery

Col. Mustard. In the Boiler Room. With a wrench, bucket and TSP...

I suspect that the cleaning may have been a normal TSP or caustic soda cleaning but was allowed to steam. This in turn can loosen material and oils from the piping that was just happy to sit there. Any additional oils, pipe dope, etc. is just a bonus. Was it skimmed or just cleaned and flushed?

I suspect at least another good day of skimming is in order, very slowly and sub-boiling. Water bounce and wet steam, go hand in hand, amplified if not caused by dirty water.  Lower pressure actually makes for a more violent waterline, but if clean, the sight glass should hold fairly steady.

Draw off some water from the boiler surface into a pan and put it on your stove. See how that boils compared to good clean tap water. Any foaming in the boiler sample?

My money would be on skimming it.

    For clarification

The boiler tune up was just cleaning out the combustion chamber

nozzle etc. No water was touched.

    Thanks
