Moline system questions

We purchased an old victorian home about 15 years ago. The heating system appears to be a Moline Vacuum system (pictures show the vacuum valve and air trap). What is the valve for on the air trap? I am wondering why the radiators on the first floor have what looks like steam traps while the radiators upstairs have valves (see pictures). I don't see the ejector or condensor anywhere in the system. At one point I had a radiator that didn't get hot. I removed the steam trap body from inside the trap body and the radiator worked great. Some of the first floor radiators don't get fully hot -- could that be because of the steam traps? Also, for the last 15 years, the system hammered on start up -- sometime quite loud. But, amazingly this winter it stopped. The system is very quiet -- alI I hear is the tap-tap-tap of the air valve. Any comments you folks have would be appreciated. Thanks

close to Moline...
The city limits of the town of Moline IL is only 22 blocks from my front door! I should know more about he Moline vapor system, but I don't, other than the traps are not original, and appear to be Dunham 1E traps. Moline usually had a hand valve on the inlet and a key valve on the outlet. I know there was also and ejector, but, You're going to have to wait until one of the pros who is experienced with Moline systems to give you more information.
