I recently bought a house with geothermal hot air heat.

I would certainly feel better with some sort of backup heat if the power went off.

Right now I have no chimneys and I don't think I want to become involved with any kind of wood burner or anything like that.

I have a propane fireplace, so I thought maybe some sort of propane heat, but I don;t know what configuration would be the best fit with my present heat.

I would probably be willing to buy some sort of  a smallish generator if necessary.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.... thanks

A generator is definitely the way to go.

Aside from one of the standing pilot units, the options for non-electrically dependant backup heat are slim.  Solid fuel is the best option.

Generators have come down considerably in pricing in recent years.  Consult with your electrician.  They can size it for emergency load (ie, a few lights, heat, refrigerator, etc.)

    Good Luck.
