I have a good friend who works as a heating installer in Tehran. We write to each other just about every day and we've spoken on the phone a few times. His name is Roohollah and he's 32 years old. He just sent me some pictures of a job he's doing. I thought you'd enjoy seeing them as much as I did.

    Korean central heating (traditional)

    That's a very modern setup.

When I was serving in S Korea in the late 60's, I was posted to a remote microwave site on top of a mountain. Let me tell you it gets VERY cold in the wintertime.

There was a small farming village a few hundred feet below our site and the small houses were thatched huts built on an earthen mounds with partial packed mud walls. The mounds were probably 16" high and they had a tunnel that ran under them. A small fire is built in one side and the heat travels under the floor and warms the entire floor. Charcoal was the fuel of choice.

This is probably one of the earlier forms of radiant heat.

    I asked about the colors.

They're all painted that way. Let's you know what's what. I've been trashing him about primary/secondary. No one else is doing it over there. He cares so much about what he does and takes so much pride in it.

    Let's see

, if he gets a leak on one of those gate valves between the yellow headers...Hmmm.

Can you say nipple and union. I hate to be negative about other peoples work but, after 40 years of trouble shooting I always look for potential headaches.

    how nice it is

it is so nice to see other people "on the other side of the fence" as just like us!

we can so often get caught up in the politics, and therefore not see that there is a competent hydronics professional just doing his job of keeping his clients warm.

i wonder how he would react to steam if he were visiting.--nbc

    And the not so pretty.

Roohollah just sent me these pictures. He writes, "The English institute that I am studying is an old building that has

four floors and has a boiler room ,I took some photos from it .those

photos show many words about Hydronic heating in Iran ,and How well we

    waste energy here ."

    Ugggghhhh...

I see they've discovered PVC over there as well eh...

That is a good reason as to why to NOT to use PVC in a closed loop heating system. Instant spaghetti.

    plastic pipe

Those pictures are confusing, your friend has taken primary secondary to a new level with the custom welded hydro separators and Stratifcation/Buffer? tanks. I see grundfoss and uponor, I like the use of split loom to protect the tubing, I'v done the same thing my self.

There's a satisfaction in seeing something familiar in a place so far away. It's more than the pipes and pumps. it's the pride shown in the symmetry and paint. I can relate to this.

I think Iranian culture is more modern and pluralistic than we think.

It sure is valuable to put a face on what could be the next war zone. I wish fox news would do a story about Dan and his Iranian internet buddy.

When you get to know people,

you realize that they are not governments. It's well worth the effort.

One of the big problems installers have over there is the quality of the copied products that arrive from China, but disguised as the real thing.

    Roohollah comments:

I'm posting this for my friend:

"We replaced an in line circulator pump (TENF) which was produced by

Armestrong company ,and it has worked for 35 years old properly. The

problem for replacing was about it consumes electricity much and home

owner was very worry about it and he said me that its electrical motor

became very hot whenever it worked.I have checked its bearing and other

parts really they were right and its bearing  weekly was lubricated very

well ;so, that pump did not have any problem to give him a good reason

to replace it ;however, This pump was really over size for two floor

building and it consumed 264 Watt per hour .I offered him to replace it

with variable wet rotor circulator pump to save energy and fuel ;so,he

accepted that.We found out that Dab pump it trustworthy and reliable for

choosing ( there are not any Taco's pump or Armestrong's pump after

revolution here );therefore, we got it after we calculated that (your

wonderful rule for choosing the pump ) ;in addition, this boiler room had

open circuit expansion tank ,and now it is equipped with close circuit

system ;how ever, this boiler room was really untidy and it was piped

very higgeldy piggeldy ,and now it works properly and landlord was

satisfied about it.I said him to phone me every time that they have

problem about heating system .Honestly, all your informative and

scientific advice help me to satisfy my clients .Thanks for all your

    support and help ."

Just got this note. Somethings are the same all over the world.

We hope you and all of your family are fine and in a great condition of

health over there;moreover, enjoy every minute of these memorable days

.Thanks a million for making us very happy by sharing those photos with

    those sophisticated technicians .

Yesterday morning one of my regular client phoned me to check his

boiler room because of leaking of relief valve ;so,I guessed that it is

vital matter and I rapidly went there .When I wanted to enter the boiler

room I saw a fantastic thing there. The landlord hangs all wet clothes

out in boiler room to dry them ;also,he thinks that is great place to do

that .Really ,the relative humidity of boiler room was too much and i

guessed it was more than 50% . We have installed this boiler room since

    2005 .

Fortunately, the problem was about extra pressure into boiler .First I

checked out pressure reducing valve and expansion tank and its bag and

relief valve and i adjusted again. I payed much attention to cold

pressure and hot pressure for filling the system ;in fact, these are

very important to have safe hydronic system .

Some more from our friend in Tehran

Today morning ,we were in our project ,which was related to Oil company

.We have installed under floor heating system since 2008 and during last

week they ask us to install room thermostat and other things that are

necessary .We have built primary and secondary header for decreasing the

temperature and we installed wet rotor circulator in supply side and

now the system is working there and  we recorded it the temperature of

supply and return sides and were right.I have taken some photos from it

and we are  very eager to know your valuable idea about it .

Tomorrow some inspectors want to inspect that building .I hope it

would make them eager to choose that system for other projects that they

    have on the boil .
