panting vents

Background:

One pipe wet return in Great Neck house circa 1926..coal to gas…current boiler installed by me 10 to 15 years ago.

Mains vented…north main three big vents (forgot name and size) south main one big vent.

Pictures show boiler etc.

This year at start up water black…drained…added Scout…drained…added Squick….top drained….boiled test….no more foaming…a few more bubbles than tap water but minimal difference.

Was running at 2lb cut in plus 1.5. with a lower than normal water line ( to avoid “panting at vents”)

Now at .5 cut in plus 1.5 cut out.

All vents are “hissing and pissing”

Please help…..

    "Wet Steam"?

Hi-  My immediate thought is you have too much "chemical water" in your boiler and it is producing "wet steam".  Is the water level in the sight glass bouncing a lot?  Is there condensation in the top of the sight glass? Both are indicators of wet steam. I think I'd try a couple of boiler flushings with plain water and then do multiple skimmings and see how that was working. If there was still a problem I might consider a washing soda cleaning. Most of the steam pros seem to avoid putting chemicals in the water as much as possible.
