while researching something else .. I came across this cool article detailing the heating and venting of the B. Altman Building in NYC. the article was written Feb 1908. You can read the article after getting the 31.5MB PDF from here: http://is.gd/YWGHzR .. the article begins on PDF page 71...

It has nice old pictures and plans .. one picture shows the boiler room with its six 250HP steam boilers ..

I hope you enjoy ..

FYI, while you have the PDF open ..

you may want to jump over to

page 143 where G. Stanton is discussing steam pipe capacities.

page 202 where they summarize the winter of '07-'08

page 226 where they talk about ventilation of a house using Cave air.

page 246 where they discuss Boiler Efficiency

page 290 Coeffiecient of Transmission in Cast Iron Radiator

page 298 What colors to paint your pipes ..

page 299 .. A remarkable new steam radiator valve .. with cut-away photo

page 318 .. price fixing of Pro Engineer Fees

page 334 .. more on pipe colors

page 337 .. cast iron vs. pressed steel radiators

347 .. temperatures for testing direct radiation systems

374 .. the Marvel Thermostat ..

.....

lastly .. the Steam Tunnels of the Kingston Ave Hospital Brooklyn, NY .. page 412

and these are just the things that caught my eye .. i'm sure there's other stuff in there of interest to others .. go on .. it's only 451 pages of delicious goodness.
