New Year, New Boiler!

Another atmospheric with a hole above the waterline. This could be habit-forming.....

This system is counterflow, and may have originally run its condensate straight back into the original boiler's steam outlet. We removed a 2"x2"x3" bullhead tee that was feeding steam into both mains, and it looks like the drip lines were added sometime after the system was first installed.

We installed a Slant/Fin Intrepid this time

since it fit the available space better than the Smith G-8 would have. Burner is the Carlin EZ-Gas. Gordon's piping artistry can be seen on the drip-line manifold.

The owners are planning an addition, and if built we will heat it with steam. We left a 2" tee in the short steam main for this, and there's room to tie in another drip line. The boiler is big enough to handle the addition, and is down-fired in its present state. Still had good combustion numbers though!

Happy New Year all- keep steaming!

Not recently that I know of

the VXT will tell us for sure. We've worked on this system a few times, but I haven't gotten around to pulling the file on it.

    Nice Job!

Nice looking installation! I was just wondering , How thick is the boiler wall normally at the point where it corroded through? Do they all corrode through in the same area?

    I think

it's 1/8" or 3/16", not exactly sure, Maybe I'll have time to check before sending it to China.

This one and the one before did corrode in almost exactly the same place.

    Rot Hole

That boiler looks to be a Burnham Independence. Just like the other one you did. Burnham has extremely restrictive instructions for make-up water for the Independence. I have an IN-4 and the manual states no more than .1 gallons a month or 1 gallon a year. A similarly sized Megasteam is allowed 6 gallons a month. My system has no leaks that I can find and I lose about a 1/2 gallon a month. Before I add water I always flush sediment so I probably add 1gallon a month. Good thing I have a probe LWCO or I'd be adding even more water.

    Hmmmmmmmmm

have to ask about that. I didn't call out the brand, didn't want to look like I was bashing Burnham.
