Steam Radiator Not Heating Up

Options
Hello,

I apologize if this is a frequently asked question, but I've looked around and this radiator seems a lot older than most. Anyways, this radiator stopped working, and we're unsure why. My grandparents used to live in this home, and I was told they used to "open the valve on the end to let water out," but when I tried the top (from the first picture, says VentRite No. 1 on it) just twisted off and I couldn't figure out what was going on underneath.

About a week ago, I turned the valve in the second picture from all the way on, to all the way off, then back on and it steamed up and heated up really quick. However, an hour later it just stopped again. If anyone has any ideas on an easy fix to this, I'm willing to try it out! Thanks.

    Basics lets start there

The vent rite # 1 is the air vent. its adjustment is the white nob on the bottom. It is numbered 1 to 8. The wooden handled valve is the service valve. It should be kept open fully all the time. The air vent is most likely in need of replacement if since it came apart. Try to get the same make of vent or a gortons brand vent maybe a C size.
Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.
