Some kind of valve?

A co-worker was working on a steamer and said it had a valve installed on the top.  He thought it's purpose was to discharge water in case the boiler flooded. Does this sound right?

    "steam boiler"

If the guy at work was working near a "steam boiler" the first valve that comes to my mind is the "pressure relief valve".  It is a safety device, mounted on the "top" designed to open automaticly if the boiler gets too much pressure in it.  Try not to be around if it ever happens, it can be ugly.

Another valve mounted on the "side" "near the top" is what I call the skimmer valve.  On mine though, I would have to use the boiler drain valve to correct a flooded condition.

    valve

No it's not a pressure relief valve that he was questioning.  He's been in the UA for 30 years.

    Valve

Maybe someone put a valve there to allow them to easily add boiler treatment chemicals.
