could it be dissolved gas in the water
being released as the water heats. What type of well and pump are you using? Is the piping pex or copper? If pex is it barrier or non? Maybe an air separator on the outlet from the water heater?Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

Hot Air:
If it is well water and it stinks, like rotten eggs, it is probably hydrogen sulfide. If it is a well or town water and it doesn't smell, it's probably hydrogen gas. When it is going to happen, put a torch to it. It may go "pop". I wouldn't try it but it is a common problem in some water heaters with the proper water chemistry
It's why you don't spray water on electrical fires or magnesium or aluminum fires. The flame is so hot that the hydrogen separates from the oxygen and feeds the fire. A firestorm is a very bad thing. And the magnesium anode rod plays a part in it.0 -
The water heater...
...acts as a settling tank for air. So, if the well is pumping air or if it has a valve that draws air into the system (that valve predates diaphragm expansion tanks) the air would collect in the tank and cause the problem your client has.
If "air" only happens first draw in the morning, it more likely is an over-active anode in the tank. If the water is not too hard, putting an air vent on top of the heater can fix the problem, but better to find the cause. It could be even something like the well pump being too close to the surface of the water.
