What is the purpose of a main vent for? Cause the main vent I have seems old and how would I know if the main vent is working or not?

Main vent
The main vent acts kinda like an exaust valve in an engine. It allows the cold air out of the main. When the steam gets to it, it closes and allows the boiler to make pressure, forcing the steam up into your radiators.
Some of them make a noise "clang...clink...tink" when they open and close. Others are silent andthey get hot when the steam gets there, and cool off when it leaves. What makes you think your main vent may not be working?0
