piping installation correct?

My plumber who installed my Burnham steam boiler I think did an incorrect job on the piping. Here is a picture. I hear a little bit of water hammering during start up always, could this be related?

    Diagram

Hi- Here's a diagram which shows why the riser pipes from the boiler to the header need to be first in the order of the piping attached to the header, sloping toward the equalizer.

    Swing joints also require

get the installation manual and say I want this or better, unless you never really paid for a complete installation, was his bid quite lower than the rest? No talking of numbers please but this was the low bider right?

2"  cast elbows must have been on sale...

The diagram Rod posted is right on,  that piping is wrong and it is why you are getting hammering at startup.  Hopefully the installer left the manual, if so look at the section on piping and see how it should look.  If not, post the model no.  of the boiler and someone here will have the correct piping diagram and recommended pipe sizes.  The header should be a larger size that the risers, and a drop header will give you dry steam and allow for pipe expansion without trying to push the boiler sections apart.  If this guy doesn't want to fix it, or has no idea what you are talking about, try to find a real steam pro to look at it.

    Compact install

Here is an example of how to get "all that" stuffed in to a compact space.
